CIC Webinar on BIM Competition 2025 Briefing
The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has been organising CIC BIM Competition annually since 2019 and providing an excellent platform for the young generation to enhance their knowledge and skills on BIM and reveal their BIM talent. The competition aims to promote the practical uses of Building Information Modelling (BIM) through collaborative and competitive learning approach among tertiary students in construction related disciplines. Now in its seventh year, "CIC BIM Competition 2025" aims to challenge the participant's creativity and innovation in the design of existing building of the Hong Kong Institute of Construction - Tai Po Training Ground into a NextGen Construction Centre. The competition is open to full-time higher education (post-secondary) students, and part-time students who are pursuing top up degrees. Teams are needed to be formed with minimum 3 to maximum 6 members from at least 2 construction disciplines. By joining this competition, students will have opportunities to learn various BIM software with free licenses through attending online self-learning trainings. This briefing will announce the details of the competition and provide information and tips to interested participants for preparing of the competition and to have a better understanding of BIM. Judging Panel
The Judging Panel is a collective group of renowned professionals in the field of BIM. Prof. Jack CHENG Panel Chair Prof. Jack CHENG is currently the Associate Head and Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Associate Director of GREAT Smart Cities Institute, and Director of BIM Lab at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests include BIM, digital twin, IoT, artificial intelligence, construction robotics, blockchain, construction and facility management, smart and low-carbon buildings, and construction digitalization. He has led a number of research projects in smart buildings and construction. He is an author of over 300 international journal and conference publications. Prof. Cheng is currently the Chairperson of CIC Committee on BIM and Construction Digitalisation, a CIC Council Member, Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), and Editorial Board Member of several international journals. He is a Past President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Greater China Section, Past Chairman of the Autodesk Industry Advisory Board (AIAB), and Past Honorary Treasurer of the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modeling (HKIBIM). He is a Fellow Member of HKICBIM, Professional Member of HKIBIM, CCBM, CCBC, and Certified Carbon Auditor Professional (CAP). He has received the Construction Industry Outstanding Person Award in 2019 and Young BIMer of the Year in 2014 from CIC, and a few research and paper awards in international conferences. Ir LAI Ho-cheong, Alvin Panel Member Ir LAI is a professional structural engineer who joined the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as a member in 1994. He holds a Bachelor degree and a Master degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he worked in consultancy firms for seven years before joining the government as a Structural Engineer in April 1995. With 30 years of experience in the Buildings Department, he has extensive expertise in building control for both new developments and existing buildings in Hong Kong. Throughout the years, he has served as Chief Structural Engineer in various sections of the Buildings Department, including the Hong Kong and Heritage Section, Kowloon and Rail Section and Site Monitoring Section of the New Buildings Division as well as the Village Houses Section of the Existing Buildings Division. Ir LAI is currently the Assistant Director of the Buildings Department, responsible for various aspects of new development, including regulatory and technical matters. He is also a member of the Climate Change Working Group on Infrastructure (CCWGI). Additionally, he serves as Chairman of several committees within the Buildings Department, including the Structural Engineering Committee, the Technical Committee on the Code of Practice for Foundations, the Technical Committee on the Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete, and the Technical Committee on the Code of Practice for Structural Use of Steel. Dr. Calvin KAM Panel Member Dr. Calvin Kam is the Founder/CEO of Strategic Building Innovation, bimSCORE, BIM Supporters Group, and PlanMeetDone.com, an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) where he specializes in strategic innovation like Management Scorecards, Building Information Modeling, Virtual Design and Construction, and Digital Twins. He is a Fellow of buildingSMART International and American Institute of Architects. Calvin advises owners globally, and is a Chapter President of buildingSMART and an Executive of bSI's Compliance Committee. He has worked with the Hong Kong Construction Industry Council, Development Bureau, Buildings Department, Housing Authority, Lands Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Sun Hung Kai Properties, Walt Disney Imagineering, English Schools Foundation, and was invited to present/facilitate at the 2014 and 2015 APEC workshops and to author APEC publications. Calvin has been an appointed international BIM expert for Singapore’s Building Construction Authority. He is a recipient of many awards including ENR's“20 under 40”and BD+C's“40 under 40”. Mr. Elvis HUI Panel Member Mr. Elvis HUI Wing Lun, a Registered Professional Engineer, is currently the Senior Manager of the Works and Contracts Division in the Urban Renewal Authority. He is leading a BIM, construction digitisation and smart building development team to enhance division operation efficiency for the project teams. He also manages the BIM, construction digitisation, and smart building implementation for redevelopment and conservation projects. He has attained different awards in construction digitalisation, smart building, and BIM. Ms. Rosana WONG Panel Member Rosana leads Yau Lee Group’s integrated business sectors and plays a pivotal role in formulating overall strategic planning. With over two decades of entrepreneurial experience, she oversees corporate business development, management of construction projects in Hong Kong, together with the expansion of regional and overseas markets, implementation of full lifecycle management, Virtual Design & Construction and AI & Robotics. Under her leadership, Yau Lee Group has grown to be a forward-thinking and green integrated corporation on a global scale. She is passionate about technology, innovation, science and urban spatial planning and has founded Ophylla Ventures to develop and execute smart city solutions to create synergies for construction digitalization not only in the Group but also for the industry as a whole. Sr YY Yip Panel Member Sr YY Yip is the Deputy Director of Design Management Department and Guangzhou District Project Director of Henderson China Investment Co. Ltd. Under his leadership, the team has been committing different landmark projects of office, arcade and mix use development and high-end residential development in China. Sr Yip serves in public bodies and organizations, currently as Chairman of BIM Committee of the HKIS, Member of the Committee on BIM and Construction Digitalization of the CIC, Panel Assessor of CIC Certified BIM Manager, Member of Authorized Persons', Registered Structural Engineers' and Registered Geotechnical Engineers' Disciplinary Board, etc. Sr Yip aims to drive and promote the enhancement of industry’s productivity and efficiency. He was the initiator and one of the founder of HKIBIM and was the speaker of various conferences, seminars, lectures to share the experience of BIM application. He was awarded the “BIMer of the Year” from the CIC in 2014 recognizing his efforts on his contribution of BIM development in Hong Kong.
